At my middle school, some of the coaches used plastic bats. They did not leave deep bruises like paddles or heavy straps, but they could generate a good deal of sting, even through jeans. With only a jockstrap and thin gym shorts protecting the buttocks, those bats really,really hurt. Maybe they could substitute for willow or hickory switches if those are not available.
In addition to hurting like crazy, a good swat would leave red mark that would last four or five days. Some teachers would tap gently, and that would sting but not leave a mark. Some would try to hit a home run with your butt.

It is important, I think, to give yourself over totally to the experience.
Yelp, cry, scream, beg- act like a 5 y/o getting it for the first time.
Not even the slightest pretence of courage. When I would resolve to take everything without flinching, I would chicken out. Giving yourself permission to cry and make noise will help to stay in position.

I searched through my memory banks to recall the swats I could recall, from belts, paddles, hairbrushes, and switches. I recalled home, school, bets with friends, etc. Two things struck me- 1. I was never as brave as I wanted to be, and 2. I was often in a position to get myself punished (like “forgetting” homework for a paddling English teacher) but chickened out at the end. I feared the pain and chickened out of opportunities even though I enjoyed the idea of the sting and the reddening.
If I had to do it over again, there would have been no pretence of courage-I would have cried, hollered, jumped, etc. as much as I could. Reacting with tears and howls would make for a deeper, more profound memory.
